Kata Tjuta Weather Month by Month

Weather here does not change how comfortable a visit is. It changes what the visit is: whether the long walk is open after eleven, what time the gates let you in, and whether the light you came for arrives at half past five in the morning or at half past six. What the weather does to a visit here

Three things, and each one has a number behind it. First, the gates move: the park opens at 5:00 am in January and at 6:30 am in June and July. Your departure time moves with them, which is why a December pickup is in the dark and a July one is not.

Second, the heat closes the long walk. The Valley of the Winds shuts at Karu Lookout from 11:00 am whenever the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36 °C, and Parks Australia’s own summer advice is not to walk after eleven at all. Third, the flies arrive with the warm months, and the park recommends a head net.

January

The park is open longest now, 5:00 am to 9:00 pm, and it is the hottest month of the year at an average maximum of 38.4 °C. The Valley of the Winds closes back to Karu Lookout from eleven on most days. Take the afternoon tour or take the morning off.

February

Almost identical to January and the second-wettest month at 40.8 mm. Gates still run 5:00 am to 9:00 pm, storms build in the afternoon, and the heat closure applies most days. Walpa Gorge stays open when the long walk does not.

March

The first month that eases. Gates move to 5:30 am and 8:30 pm, the average maximum drops to 34.5 °C, and the closure becomes occasional rather than routine. Flies are still at their worst, so bring the net.

April

The month most people would pick if they knew. Average maximum 30.1 °C, 15.6 mm of rain, gates 5:30 am to 8:00 pm, and the full Valley of the Winds circuit open all day on most days. Nights are cool rather than cold.

May

Cool season begins. Average maximum 24.3 °C and minimum 9.2 °C, gates 6:00 am to 7:30 pm. Both walks are comfortable at any hour, which will not be true again for five months.

June

Average maximum 20.3 °C, the coolest by day, and 5.5 °C overnight. Gates open latest now at 6:30 am, which pushes every sunrise departure later with them. A pre-dawn pickup in June needs a coat, not a jacket.

July

Coldest overnight of the year at an average 4.5 °C, and mild by day at 20.8 °C. Gates 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. This is peak season and the small-group afternoon departures fill first.

August

The driest month at 5.3 mm, warming to 23.8 °C by day. Gates return to 6:00 am. Wildflowers begin, and Parks Australia names August and September as the two best months to see them.

September

Wildflowers peak, average maximum 29.1 °C, gates 5:30 am to 7:30 pm. The flies return in numbers this month, which is the one thing nobody packs for. Walking is still comfortable all day.

October

The turn back into the hot season. Average maximum 32.5 °C, gates 5:00 am to 8:00 pm, and the first heat closures of the season start appearing in the second half of the month.

November

Hot and building at 35.0 °C average maximum with 34.2 mm of rain. Gates 5:00 am to 8:30 pm. Heat closures are routine from late in the month, so plan the long walk for the first hours of light.

December

The wettest month on average at 46.5 mm and close to the hottest at 36.4 °C. Gates run their longest, 5:00 am to 9:00 pm. Storms are dramatic and brief, and the gorge after rain is worth the timing.

The five Anangu seasons, and which one you want

Parks Australia names May to September as the best time to come, when the daytime maximum usually sits between 20 °C and 30 °C. That is the honest answer for walking. August and September are the best two for wildflowers.

Anangu describe five seasons rather than four, and they track food and weather rather than the calendar.

Itjanu / Inuntji — January to March. Utuwari, overcast clouds, usually bring rain, and the food plants flower.

Wanitjunkupai — April and May. The beginning of the cold weather, and the park's reptiles go into brumation.

Wari — late May to July. The cold time, with nyinnga (frost and ice) and kulyar-kulyarpa (dew) on some mornings.

Piriyakutu / Piriya Piriya — August to October. The piriya arrives, a warm steady wind from the north and west. Animals breed and food plants flower.

Mai Wiyaringkupai / Kuli — late October to December. The hottest season. Ngangkali, storm clouds, bring lightning but little rain.

Best time of day

Late afternoon, and this is where Kata Tjuta differs from Uluru. Parks Australia’s own tip is that the benches along Walpa Gorge sit mostly empty at the end of the day, because everyone else has moved to the sunset viewing area — so the gorge is at its quietest exactly when the colour on the walls is at its best.

The other good hour is the first one after the gates open, when the air is cold, the flies are down and every track is open whatever the forecast says. Between about eleven and three in the hot months there is nothing to be gained outdoors, which is what the Cultural Centre is for.

Frequently asked questions

Does it ever rain enough to matter? Around 280 mm falls in an average year, most of it in short storms between November and March. Rain fills the seasonal stream in the gorge and is worth timing a walk around rather than away from.

Will the cold catch you out? It catches most people out. If you are booking a pre-dawn pickup between May and August, pack the layer you think you will not need — a July morning here averages 4.5 °C and the wind between the domes makes it feel colder.
